Session Details + FAQs

Everything you need to know before your session.

From choosing a location to helping children feel comfortable, here is what to expect before, during, and after your session. And when real life changes the plan, we’ll work through that too.

Ask about a session

How it works

A simple process, with plenty of help along the way.

01

Tell me about your people

Start by sharing who will be part of the session, where you’re located, and what you hope to capture about your family right now.

02

We’ll make a plan

Once your session is booked, I’ll help with location, timing, wardrobe, and anything else that will make the experience feel comfortable and manageable.

03

Come as you are

I’ll give you clear, gentle direction and plenty to do together. There is room for movement, laughter, quiet moments, and the wonderfully unpredictable parts of family life.

Frequently asked questions

The practical stuff.

Every family and session is a little different. These answers cover the questions that come up most often, but you are always welcome to ask about something specific.

Ask me a question

Begin with the inquiry form and tell me a little about your family, location, and the kind of session you have in mind. I’ll respond with availability and the next steps.

Your date is officially reserved once the session agreement is signed and the requested deposit has been received.

Sessions may take place in your home, outdoors, or in the studio, depending on the kind of photographs you want and what will work best for your family.

I photograph throughout Riverdale, New York City, Westchester, Arlington, and the greater Washington, DC area. Northern Virginia dates are offered during select travel weekends throughout the year.

I’m happy to suggest locations based on the season, light, accessibility, and the ages of your children.

Outdoor sessions are generally planned around the most flattering available light. Depending on the season and location, that often means morning or later in the day.

Beautiful light matters, but so does having children who are awake and reasonably happy. We’ll balance the light with naps, meals, bedtime, and what is realistic for your family.

In-home and studio sessions usually offer more flexibility with timing.

Choose clothing that feels like you, fits comfortably, and allows everyone to move. Coordinating colors and textures usually photograph more naturally than perfectly matching outfits.

Soft neutrals, earthy colors, denim, knits, and subtle patterns often work beautifully, but your wardrobe should still feel specific to your family.

Once we know the location and season, I can help you think through colors, layers, and how everyone’s clothing will work together.

Children do not need to perform or behave perfectly for us to make meaningful photographs.

They may need time to warm up. They may want to move, explore, be held, tell me about a dinosaur, or take a break from the entire idea. That is all useful information, not evidence that the session is failing.

I use short prompts, games, movement, and gentle direction to help children engage without expecting them to hold a smile or remain in one pose.

Let me know before the session. We can choose a familiar setting, begin with a low-pressure activity, and avoid making your child the immediate center of attention.

A private session is usually a better fit than a mini when a child needs significant transition time or becomes overwhelmed by new people and places.

Absolutely. You will not be left standing in front of the camera wondering what to do with your hands.

I’ll guide you into flattering arrangements and offer simple things to do together. Then I’ll watch for the expressions, gestures, and connection that happen once everyone stops thinking quite so hard about the camera.

Yes. Grandparents, cousins, and several generations together can be a wonderful reason to plan a session.

Larger groups require more time for movement and different combinations, so please share the complete group size when you inquire. I’ll recommend the right session length and structure.

During some mini-session events, two adjoining spots may be booked back to back for a larger group. This must be arranged before booking and depends on availability.

Often, yes. Pets are part of the family and are welcome when the location allows them.

Please tell me in advance so we can choose an appropriate setting and make a plan for leashes, treats, extra hands, and breaks when the pet is no longer needed in the frame.

I’ll keep an eye on the forecast as the session approaches. Light clouds are often beautiful for photographs, so an overcast day does not automatically mean we need to change plans.

When rain, unsafe conditions, extreme heat, or another weather issue makes the session impractical, we’ll discuss an alternate time, date, or location.

Final weather decisions are often made close to the session because forecasts can change quickly.

Please contact me as soon as you know there may be a problem. A sick, exhausted, or deeply uncomfortable child is not likely to enjoy the session, and their wellbeing comes first.

Rescheduling options depend on the type of session, availability, travel dates, and the terms of your session agreement. Mini-session rescheduling may be more limited because the location and date are arranged as a single event.

Many families photograph within the first few weeks, but there is no single perfect window.

We can plan around your due date and adjust once the baby arrives. Recovery, feeding, older siblings, and how your family is settling in all matter more than reaching a particular day on the calendar.

Your baby does not need to sleep throughout the session, and your home does not need to look perfect.

Mini sessions are short, structured sessions offered on select dates at a pre-selected location. Families are scheduled one after another throughout the day, and the session length, image count, and pricing are set for each seasonal offering.

Private sessions are scheduled individually and provide more time, flexibility, combinations, and room to shape the experience around your family.

Minis can work beautifully for families who arrive ready to begin and for children who warm up quickly. A private session is generally better for newborns, large extended families, multiple locations or outfits, and children who need a slower pace.

You’ll receive a private online gallery of thoughtfully edited, high-resolution photographs.

The number of photographs and delivery timing depend on the type and length of the session. Your specific session details will be included in the booking information and agreement.

Galleries are designed to be easy to view, download, share, and use when ordering prints.

Every delivered photograph is individually selected and edited for color, light, contrast, and overall consistency.

My approach keeps skin, expressions, movement, and family life looking natural. Temporary distractions may be softened when appropriate, but the goal is not to remove every line, freckle, missing tooth, or piece of real life.

Your gallery will make it easy to order professional prints and photographic products. You may also download your high-resolution files and print them elsewhere.

Professional labs generally produce more consistent color, paper quality, and longevity than many consumer printing services.

One last thing

You do not need to have it all together.

You do not need perfectly coordinated clothes, perfectly behaved children, or a family that naturally knows what to do in front of a camera.

Bring your people. I’ll bring the plan, the direction, and the willingness to follow the moment when something better than the plan happens.
